"Those children, their parents, their family, their parish and others were harmed. We are sorry. I am sorry,"
The Archdiocese of St. Paul & Minneapolis has settled with survivors of clergy sex abuse as a part of the efforts to lead the archdiocese out of bankruptcy. And it’s a big settlement — $210 million. That’s in dollars btw.
In 2015 the archdiocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the face of multiple claims of sexual abuse by clergy members. I won’t go into too many details as you are better off reading the excellent reporting from Minnesota Public Radio on the matter. (Full disclosure — I’m a damn proud member of MPR.)
For an amazing background report, this MPR series,"Betrayed By Silence" is both heart-breaking and infuriating.
